FRP Liner for Manholes and Pump Stations
Reinstate deteriorated concrete manholes and pump stations by inserting a FRP (fibreglass) liner from ARMATEC. The FRP liner is pre-made in ARMATEC's factory to the required dimensions before excavation begins. Once inserted and sealed at the bottom, and after inlet pipes are made off, the annulus between the FRP liner and the concrete is filled with a flowable cement grout to seal and fill the cavity. The bottom and underside of the top are coated with Armaline moisture tolerant epoxy coatings from ARMATEC.
The FRP liner restores strength back to the deteriorated manhole or pump station. The wall thickness of the liner can be made to any strength requirement, depending on the state of deterioration of the existing structure.
The fibreglass is corrosion resistant to hydrogen sulphide and other chemicals typically found in wastewater systems. The design life of the FRP liner is 50 years plus.
The resulting lining is ultra smooth, for ease of cleaning, and long low maintenance life.
Applying a coating is an alternative, but is fraught with problems. Achieving satisfactory surface preparation is very difficult, especially when the concrete deterioration goes deeper than 20mm. Getting the coating to adhere, and achieving a smooth pinhole free surface requires a lot of effort, if it is possible at all. The resulting design life is probably 10 years. On top of this, the work can take many days if not weeks.
On the other hand, using a FRP liner, the reinstatement work can be done in as little as 2 or 3 days. Excavation work is minimised compared to total replacement, as the existing concrete structure is retained.
In a manhole measuring one metre in diameter by 5 metres deep, 90% of the surface area is the walls. This is the part that deteriorates the fastest, and is most prone to leaks and infiltration. It is also the part that is quickly and easily lined with the FRP liner.
A typical procedure and detailed methology are given in the bulletins on this page. Please contact ARMATEC for a quote for your project.
