Fibreglass Flumes 

The fibreglass flumes are manufactured from moulds made to the specific standards. Accuracy of detail is assured. All flumes of the same size are identical aiding in calibration. Stiffeners are moulded onto the exterior of the flumes, and at site concrete is often poured around them to ensure dimensions cannot change.

Flumes measure flow by recording the height of the standing wave generated in the throat of the flume. Ultrasonic level guages and bubbler tubes can be used.

Manholes can be integrated into the flumes. These provide access to the flume throat and instrumentation for future servicing. Incorporating the manhole into the flume at the time of manufacture simplifies construction and speeds installation.

Councils haved used the trapezoidal flumes for measuring mixed discharges from industrial sites, for the purpose of calculating trade waste charges. The flumes are installed in a manhole just outside the boundary of the site to be monitored. Then at pre-determined intervals, the Council officers install a sampler inside the manhole to both sample and measure the flow over 24 hours or more. The results form the basis for calculating the charges.

On one job, a flume was installed into a trade waste discharge from an abbatoir in less than nine hours on a holiday weekend when the factory was shut. This included excavating the line, cutting the line, lifting in the flume, making the joints, backfilling, and landscaping.
